Engaging Nature’s
Heart
Michael Birnbaum
I love to be out in nature with my camera because I notice
events that I would otherwise miss. I was capturing an image
of a lotus flower. The shot I wanted was a close-up of the
petals and yellow core of the lotus. I had my camera
centered above the lotus and I was shooting for several
minutes and then it happened:
Two bees landed on opposite sides of the lotus. They
appeared lonely and in search of something. They spiraled
towards the center. Their antennas touched and so started
their communication. One bee’s proboscis entered the other
bee’s mouth. Chills ran down my neck as the two bees started
to kiss. Was this a love affair? Indeed it was as I later
learned from a beekeeper. It is the loving gesture of one
bee sharing nectar to assist in the other’s journey back to
the hive. To my knowledge no one has ever photographed this
magical event.
The consciousness evolutionary epiphany is: “Loneliness
spiraling to communication ends in love.” By taking time to
engage nature’s heart we too can learn about true love.
